EU price rules

The storefront block

The part shoppers see, and how to add it.

The price history block shows a single line under a discounted price on your product page, for example “Lowest price in the 30 days before this discount: 189.00”, or the saving as a percentage worked out from that figure. An app embed puts a shorter line on collection grids, search results and in the cart.

The percentage is worked out from the 30-day price in your store's currency and rounded down, so it never shows a bigger saving than your prices support.

Adding it

  1. 1
    Open EU price rules

The screen tells you whether the block and the embed are on your live theme. For each one that isn't, a button opens your theme editor at the right place.

  2. 2
Add the block to your product template

Drag it under the price and save the theme.

  3. 3
    Switch on the embed

Turn on the app embed for grids and the cart, and save.

  4. 4
    Check back

The app checks your live theme again and reports what it finds.

When it shows nothing

  • The product isn't discounted.
  • The product is exempt, or doesn't have enough history and your rules say not to show one.
  • The product was already on sale when the app started recording.
  • The shopper is paying in a converted currency, or their market has fixed prices from a price list.
  • On Pro, you chose to hide the line in the shopper's market.
  • The price on the page isn't the price the figure was worked out from.
  • The EU price rules are switched off.

A line about an old price under a full-price product is clutter, and a wrong figure is worse than none, so in all of these the line stays hidden.

Currency

Money uses your theme's own formatting, so it matches the prices beside it. For now the line shows only to shoppers paying in your store's currency. Shopify rounds converted prices, often to .95, .99 or a whole number, and that rounding could make a converted 30-day price look higher than it was. Until the app can work out the exact figure for each market, the line stays hidden in converted currencies.

Languages and wording

The line comes in 15 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Czech, Romanian, Greek and Hungarian. Shoppers see it in whichever language they are reading, whatever your admin language is.

The Wording on your store section of the EU price rules screen lists every language your store publishes, with a field for each line, a live preview and a reset button. A language we don't ship starts from the English text until you write your own. The wording is yours to stand behind, so read our defaults through, above all in languages you don't speak.

Checkout discounts in the cart
A cart line discounted by one of your checkout-discount sales gets no 30-day line for that discount. Your sale's own wording carries it there.
Custom and headless themes
The check looks for the block on a standard product template. On a custom or headless theme it reports “unknown” instead of “missing”, so you aren't told something is wrong when it isn't. The block still works if you place it yourself.
