EU price rules
EU price rules
Optional. For stores selling to shoppers in the European Union.
What it does
Stores selling into the EU have to show the lowest price they charged in the 30 days before a discount, and work the advertised saving out from that price. Turn this on and the app works that figure out for every product and shows it under your sale prices.
It also checks the crossed-out price on anything you discount. If a discount would claim a bigger saving than your own prices support, the app either lowers the crossed-out price and lets the change through, or holds it and tells you, whichever you chose.
Turning it on
- 1Switch it on from the home screen
The “Selling in the EU?” card has the switch. There is nothing to set up first.
- 2Add the price history block to your theme
The EU price rules screen links straight to your theme editor. Without the block, shoppers see nothing, however well everything else is working.
- 3Turn on the app embed
A second button switches on the embed that puts the line on collection grids and in the cart.
- 4Choose what happens to an overstated discount
In Settings: lower the crossed-out price to the 30-day low and carry on, or leave the price alone and show you. Lowering it is the default because it keeps you selling.
Settings also has How far back to look, from 30 to 365 days. Leave it at 30 unless a country you sell into asks for longer.
What counts as an overstated discount
- A crossed-out price above the lowest price you charged in the 30 days before the discount started.
- A crossed-out price on a product whose price never came down, or one left on after a price rise. There is no reduction behind it, so lowering removes the crossed-out price and holding refuses the change.
A sale that was already running when you installed the app isn't flagged, because its earlier price was set before the app started recording. The storefront shows no 30-day price for it either. Once the price goes back up and comes down again, the new discount is checked like any other.
The first 30 days
Price history starts when you install, so a new install has less than 30 days of it. For a product with less history than the look back, the app works from the history it has. On the Pro plan a market can instead say when the product went on sale, or hold sales until the history is complete. The app shows how many days it has recorded so far.
Changes made anywhere are checked
Prices you change in the Shopify admin, or that another app changes, are checked too. Those changes are already live by then, so the app lists them on the EU price rules screen with the numbers and leaves the price as you set it. If another tool owns your pricing, switch off Also check price changes made outside this app in Settings.
Sales that discount at checkout count as well. What shoppers paid during one is recorded, so a discount after it can't name a 30-day price higher than that.
Selling into several countries
On the Pro plan each market can have its own rules: how far back to look, lower or hold, new products, perishable goods, and whether its shoppers see the line. Because one price reaches every market, the strictest rules across your markets apply to every price. The Rules per market page explains how they combine.
