Selling in the EU
EU legal guarantee notice
Optional. Shows the European Commission's legal guarantee notice to shoppers in the EU, and the GARAN label on products with a producer guarantee.
What it does
From 27 September 2026, stores selling goods to shoppers in the EU have to remind them of their legal guarantee before they buy, using a notice the European Commission designed. Where a producer gives a free guarantee of more than two years, the store also shows the Commission's GARAN label on that product. Turn this on and the app shows both.
Shoppers see the notice's own title, Legal guarantee, as a link with its first sentence underneath. One click opens the full notice. Beside it is a link to the EU's Your Europe page on the legal guarantee, in the shopper's language.
Turning it on
- 1Open EU legal guarantee
It is in the app menu. Turn on Show the legal guarantee notice.
- 2Switch on the app embed
Press Turn on in theme editor, then save the theme. The notice goes under the buy buttons on product pages and above the checkout button in the cart and cart drawer.
- 3Or place the block yourself
If you want the notice somewhere else on the product page, add the EU legal guarantee block in the theme editor. The block then takes the place of the embed on product pages. Its settings can also show the full notice on the page instead of behind a link.
In the theme editor the notice shows whatever country you preview from, so you can see where it sits. On your live store only shoppers in the EU see it.
Who sees it
- Shoppers in the 27 EU countries. A block setting adds Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
- Products that ship. Gift cards and products with nothing to ship, like digital downloads, don't show it.
- Consumers only. Company buyers on B2B don't see it.
If you sell services as products, list their product tags or product types under Products that don't need it. Tags and types have to match exactly.
Languages
The Commission publishes the notice in all 24 EU languages and the app ships every one. A shopper gets their own language if it is one of the 24, otherwise the main language of their country, otherwise English. The title and first sentence on the page are the Commission's own words, so we don't translate anything.
The GARAN label
The label is only for one kind of guarantee. Add a product under Producer guarantee label only when the guarantee meets all four points:
- It comes from the producer of the product.
- It costs the shopper nothing extra.
- It covers the whole product, not just a part of it.
- It lasts more than 2 years.
Your own store warranty, a paid extended warranty or a guarantee on one part can't use the label. You decide whether a guarantee qualifies, because the app can't read a producer's terms.
- 1Add a product
Pick it from your catalog.
- 2Enter the years, brand and model
Whole years from 3 to 99. Brand and model share one line on the label, so the app tells you if they are too long to fit.
- 3Tick the box and save
The box confirms the guarantee meets the four points. The label appears on that product page from then on.
On the page the label shows in its small form, and the full label opens when a shopper clicks or taps it. Only the years, brand and model are filled in. Everything else is the Commission's template as published. A product has one brand and model. If its options are different models, make one product per model or leave the label off.
Changing how it looks
The block and the embed have Design settings for the link and the line under it: a box or plain text, text size, colour, bold, and space above. The notice and the label themselves can't be restyled. The EU rules say they must appear as the Commission published them, in colour.
What it doesn't cover
- Checkout. The Commission's guidance suggests showing the notice there too. Apps can only add to checkout before payment on Shopify Plus, so the app stops at the cart.
- Your order confirmation email. Shopify's notification emails are your own templates, and apps can't edit them.
- Collection pages. The notice shows on product pages and in the cart, where a shopper decides to buy.
