This is one of those Shopify weeks where the updates look small until they hit reporting, compliance, and acquisition. GA4 purchase tracking is expected to get a native server-side boost for stores using the Google & YouTube app, Shopify's self-serve cancellation flow is now live for EU withdrawal use cases, and Pinterest has made Performance+ campaigns easier to launch from Shopify.
None of this needs a panic rebuild. It does need ownership. The stores that win from these updates will be the ones that check their measurement baseline, make cancellation easy to find, and test Pinterest without trusting platform numbers blindly.
The short answer
Shopify merchants should review three things before July 2026: whether GA4 purchase events will change because of the Google & YouTube app, whether EU customers can clearly request cancellations and withdrawals, and whether Pinterest Performance+ is worth a controlled acquisition test. Each update can help, but each one can also create bad data or customer friction if nobody owns the setup.
1. GA4 purchase tracking may get closer to Shopify order reality
The practical promise of a Shopify-to-GA4 server-side purchase event is simple: fewer missed purchases caused by browser blockers, cookie limits, checkout redirects, or thank-you-page scripts that do not fully fire. If your Shopify order count has always been higher than GA4 purchases, this is the kind of infrastructure change that can narrow the gap.
For stores using the Google & YouTube app, industry reporting says GA4 will start receiving Shopify purchase events server-to-server in July 2026. Treat that as a measurement migration, not just a tracking improvement. Your August 2026 GA4 revenue may look higher than August 2025 even if the store did not actually grow by the same amount.
- ✓Check whether your GA4 property is connected through the Google & YouTube app
- ✓Export a 30-day baseline comparing Shopify orders, GA4 purchases, Google Ads conversions, and any server-side tracking tool
- ✓Confirm how purchase deduplication is handled if you already use GTM server-side, Elevar, Littledata, Analyzify, Stape, or a custom Measurement Protocol setup
- ✓Annotate GA4 and internal dashboards when the rollout starts so stakeholders do not mistake recovered tracking for sudden growth
- ✓Keep auditing upper-funnel events, because purchase recovery does not automatically fix view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, or consent-mode issues
2. EU cancellations are not just a policy page problem
Shopify's self-serve returns now support cancellation requests. Buyers can request cancellations through self-serve, merchants can configure return and cancellation rules per market, and Shopify specifically frames this as useful for EU right-of-withdrawal requirements.
The legal detail matters: Shopify's help center says the EU electronic withdrawal function requirement took effect on June 19, 2026. Shopify also says merchants selling to EU consumers need a clearly visible electronic function, such as a button or link, that lets customers exercise withdrawal directly from the store. This is general information, not legal advice, but it is a clear implementation signal.
- ✓Enable self-serve returns and cancellations under Settings > Customer accounts
- ✓Choose whether customers can request returns, cancellations, or both
- ✓Set return and cancellation rules, including market-specific rules for EU markets
- ✓Add the customer accounts URL to a returns, cancellations, or withdrawal page
- ✓Add the same link to the footer and refund policy so the path is easy to find
- ✓Update order confirmation emails if your cancellation window is time-sensitive
- ✓Document manual review steps because a cancellation request does not automatically change the order state
"The goal is not to hide cancellation behind support. The goal is to make the legally required path obvious without damaging operations."

3. Pinterest is easier to test, but still needs measurement discipline
Pinterest has expanded Performance+ with New Customer Acquisition and one-click shopping campaigns for eligible Shopify merchants. Pinterest says advertisers can define existing customers, assign higher value to new customers, and let Performance+ prioritize likely new buyers. In early testing, Pinterest reported a 64% average increase in new-customer conversions for advertisers using NCA.
That is useful for visual categories such as home, fashion, beauty, food, decor, gifts, and lifestyle products. But Pinterest can also create attribution confusion because it often influences consideration before purchase. Start small, check incrementality where possible, and do not judge success from one platform dashboard alone.
- ✓Confirm the Pinterest Shopify integration is connected and catalog data is healthy
- ✓Use a small test budget before moving spend from Meta, Google, or email
- ✓Upload or define existing customer segments before using New Customer Acquisition
- ✓Compare Pinterest-reported conversions against Shopify, GA4, and blended MER
- ✓Use product-level creative that matches real search and planning intent, not generic lifestyle imagery only
- ✓Watch new-customer rate, contribution margin, assisted revenue, and repeat purchase quality
The practical priority order
If you sell in the EU, cancellation and withdrawal visibility comes first. If paid media performance decisions depend on GA4, prepare the tracking baseline next. Pinterest is the growth test after the store's compliance and measurement foundations are not actively leaking trust or data.
- ✓EU store or EU customers: set up cancellation access and review the withdrawal path now
- ✓Google & YouTube app installed: baseline Shopify orders versus GA4 purchases before July
- ✓Existing server-side tracking: check deduplication before native GA4 purchase events arrive
- ✓Visual product catalog: test Pinterest Performance+ only after catalog, feed, and tracking are clean
