A custom Shopify theme usually costs between $5,000 and $35,000 from an agency, and freelancers are often quoted lower. Plus builds and heavy design work can go past that. Before you pay anything, try your products on a free Horizon theme, because plenty of stores don't need custom at all.
What agencies publish
- ✓Storetasker puts freelancers at $3,000 to $6,000.
- ✓OuterBox says $5,000 to $20,000 and up for custom design.
- ✓Blackbelt Commerce splits it into customization at $2,000 to $8,000, semi-custom at $8,000 to $18,000, full custom at $18,000 to $35,000 and Plus at $25,000 to $55,000.
- ✓First Pier quotes $15,000 to $60,000 and up for a custom build.
- ✓Thought Bulb starts at $3,500 for a tightly scoped build, and most of ours run 4 to 6 weeks.
These were on the linked pages in November 2026. A price range on a website is a sales tool as well as a fact, ours included, so compare what each one covers.
What moves the quote
- ✓Design: building from finished Figma files costs less than starting with a blank page.
- ✓Templates: a store with one product type is a smaller job than one with bundles, subscriptions and a lookbook.
- ✓Custom features: configurators, B2B pricing and anything that changes the cart need more building and testing.
- ✓Content and data: metafields, migrated pages and product data clean-up all take time.
- ✓Apps: each app has to be fitted to the new theme and tested.
Ask for the quote to list templates and features by name. Then you can see what was left out, and two quotes become comparable.
How long a build takes
Timelines vary as much as prices. First Pier says 6 to 10 weeks for heavy customization and 3 to 6 months for full custom. Ask Phill describes about 8 weeks of design plus 8 to 10 weeks of build. Ours usually run 4 to 6 weeks, and a bigger scope takes longer here too.
If you want it live for a sale, count back from the date and leave two weeks of slack. Don't launch a new theme the week before Black Friday.
When you don't need a custom theme
Shopify's free Horizon themes are built on theme blocks, and since December 2025 Sidekick can generate blocks in any Theme Store theme. In October 2026 Shopify also announced Canvas, a design surface for building with Sidekick, and said it isn't replacing the existing editor yet. I wouldn't plan a store around Canvas until it has been out for a while.
Paid Theme Store themes are a one-time purchase, usually a few hundred dollars. With a free or paid theme plus a few custom sections, you can often get most of the way for far less than a full build. Ask Phill argues custom rarely pays back below about €5M in revenue. I'd be less strict about the number, but it's the right instinct.
When custom earns its cost
- ✓Your product needs a page no theme offers, such as a configurator or a complex size guide
- ✓The brand depends on looking unlike anything else in the category
- ✓Years of edits and apps have left a theme nobody wants to touch
- ✓Speed is suffering because a general theme carries code you don't use
If your theme is only messy, read what to fix before you redesign first. A clean-up can be a fraction of the price of a rebuild.
The costs after launch
A custom theme doesn't get Theme Store updates. That keeps your code stable, and it also means new Shopify features only arrive when a developer adds them. Budget some ongoing hours, and get the code handover in writing: who holds it, where it lives and what happens if you change developers.
We build custom Shopify themes from $3,500, and we'll tell you first if a cheaper route gets you there.
