If your Shopify store sells to EU consumers, you need a withdrawal function customers can use online. In Germany it is called the Widerrufsbutton. This post covers the Shopify side of it, from where the link sits in the theme to the app we install. Ask legal counsel about your exact obligations, product exceptions and wording, because none of what follows is legal advice. The technical part still has to be done well: the function has to be easy to find, usable without friction, and reliable enough that your team can process requests properly.
In practice that means a withdrawal page or button customers can find, a two-step confirmation, a way to identify the customer and the order, an automatic confirmation email, and an internal process for handling what comes in.
English summary: what changes for Shopify stores?
EU consumers already have a broad right of withdrawal for most distance contracts. The Your Europe consumer guidance covers the 14-day cooling-off period for online purchases and the exceptions, which include customised goods, goods that perish quickly, certain sealed goods and some digital content.
What is new for Shopify stores is the interface. The IHK Stuttgart FAQ describes the electronic withdrawal function as one that lets a consumer withdraw from a distance contract as easily as they concluded it, with a two-step process so nobody withdraws by accident.
What the withdrawal function should handle
- ✓A clearly readable withdrawal action, labelled Vertrag widerrufen or something equally clear
- ✓A second confirmation action, labelled Widerruf bestätigen or something equally clear
- ✓The consumer's name
- ✓Enough information to identify the contract, the order, or the part of the contract being withdrawn
- ✓An electronic contact address for the receipt confirmation
- ✓An immediate confirmation of receipt on a durable medium, usually email
- ✓The function stays visible and available for the whole withdrawal period
- ✓No forced login or registration for customers who checked out as guests
Is a footer link enough?
One small link in the footer is the shortcut most stores reach for, and it is risky. The IHK guidance says footer placement needs care around readability, contrast and clear separation from the generic legal links (terms, imprint, policies). In most Shopify themes the footer is exactly the dense block where a link like that disappears.
Build a dedicated withdrawal page instead. Link to it with a clear label such as Kauf widerrufen or Widerrufsformular, give the link enough contrast in the footer or navigation, and make sure submissions can be matched against Shopify orders.
Our Shopify app recommendation: Revoq paid plan
If you need this live quickly, install Revoq - EU Withdrawal Button and put a production store on a paid plan. The app store listing covers the two-step withdrawal form, no customer-login requirement, automatic confirmation email, Shopify order matching, status tracking, Theme Editor customisation, multilingual support and EU compliance features.
The free plan is fine for evaluation. For a store that actually sells, we put it on a paid plan, because the Essential and Professional plans add the operational features: app branding removed, order tagging, partial returns, custom reasons, custom confirmation email templates, verified-order controls, deadline blocking, Shopify Returns creation, audit logs and evidence packs, depending on the plan.
If you go the app route, start with the Revoq listing and check the paid-plan features against what legal and operations need.

We helped configure a withdrawal form flow like this for Goldknopf. The page asks for name, order number and email, lets the customer pick items and reasons where they are available, has a confirmation step, and is linked from the footer as Kauf widerrufen.
The form has to fit the live theme and the store's language, sit in the right place in the navigation or footer, and make it obvious to the customer whether they are submitting a return request, a warranty claim, a cancellation or a legal withdrawal.

- ✓Ask legal counsel whether your products and contracts fall under the withdrawal-button requirement
- ✓Decide between an app, a custom theme build, or a mix of the two
- ✓Add a dedicated withdrawal page with clear German wording, plus other languages if the store needs them
- ✓Link it visibly from the storefront and do not force guest customers to log in
- ✓Use the two-step logic: start the withdrawal, then confirm it
- ✓Capture the name, the order or contract reference, and an email address for the confirmation
- ✓Send the confirmation email immediately, and keep out any wording that suggests the request has already been legally reviewed
- ✓Sort out internal handling: status, tags, exports, who owns it, and an audit trail
- ✓Test excluded products, partial returns, guest orders, account orders and the mobile view
Deutsch: Was bedeutet der Widerrufsbutton fuer Shopify-Shops?
Was sollte die Widerrufsfunktion enthalten?
Unsere Empfehlung fuer Shopify
"Installing the app is the smallest part of compliance work on Shopify. Choosing it, placing the link in the storefront, getting the legal wording right, building the internal workflow and testing the whole thing are one job."
