Two things happened this July that every store shipping into Europe should treat as one event. On 1 July 2026 the EU ended its €150 duty-free threshold for imported parcels, so low-value orders now attract customs duty too. On 10 July, Shopify shipped automated duties-inclusive pricing for Managed Markets, which lets you build duties, import taxes, and cross-border costs into the price a European shopper sees.
Put those together and the surprise-fee problem got worse for anyone ignoring it, while the fix became close to a settings change for anyone who is not.
Surprise fees are a conversion problem before they are a logistics problem
A shopper in Berlin who pays €62 at checkout and then gets a €9 customs demand from the courier is not thinking about tariff schedules. They think your store misled them. Carrier-collected fees produce refused parcels, chargebacks, one-star reviews, and customers who never come back. Duty at the door is usually the most damaging post-purchase surprise in cross-border DTC, and since this month it applies to cheap orders as well as expensive ones.
How to roll it out without breaking your price architecture
- ✓Model the landed cost per market before you switch anything on. Duties-inclusive prices go up, and psychological price points (€49, €99) may need re-anchoring market by market
- ✓Check the promotion maths, because a percentage discount on a duties-inclusive price discounts the duty along with it
- ✓Update product page and checkout copy to say prices include duties and import taxes. The reassurance only counts if you say it out loud
- ✓Verify that feeds and channels (Google, Meta, marketplaces) carry the market-correct price after the change
- ✓Watch conversion and refusal rates per market for a few weeks instead of judging the change on day two
"International shoppers do not want cheap. They want final. A stable landed price converts better than a lower price with an asterisk."
