Shopify hreflang Settings: When to Change Them and When Not To

Shopify now lets you switch automatic hreflang tags on or off from the admin instead of asking support. Most stores should leave the toggle alone. Here is how to tell if yours is the exception.

Shopify hreflang Settings: When to Change Them and When Not To

Since the July 2026 changelog, merchants can turn Shopify's automatic hreflang tags on or off from admin settings. Before that you had to raise a support ticket. That was annoying, and it also stopped people from flipping the switch on a hunch. In our experience the stores keenest to touch this setting are usually the ones that should leave it alone.

What hreflang does for a Shopify store

If you sell through several markets with localised URLs, hreflang tags tell search engines which version of a page belongs to which language and region. With the tags in place, a German shopper lands on the German page with EUR pricing. Remove them, or get them wrong, and Google has to guess. Versions of the same page start competing with each other and international rankings slide over a few weeks. The damage is slow and easy to miss, which is why hreflang comes up so often in Shopify SEO threads on Reddit.

When switching off automatic tags is legitimate

  • ✓You run your own hreflang implementation (an edge layer, an app, or a headless setup) and Shopify's automatic tags duplicate or contradict it
  • ✓Your market structure changed, say from folders to domains or after a market consolidation, and the automatic tags now point at URLs that no longer match your strategy
  • ✓An SEO audit found conflicting hreflang from a theme or app and you are consolidating to a single source

Two reasons are missing from that list: a crawler flagged a warning you did not understand, or a forum post said hreflang slows the site down. It does not. The tags are a few lines of HTML.

"The dangerous admin settings are the ones whose damage shows up six weeks later in a channel nobody checks weekly."

If you do change it, do it like a deployment

  • ✓Record current international impressions and clicks per market in Search Console first, so you have a baseline
  • ✓Make sure exactly one system emits hreflang after the change. Zero and two are both broken
  • ✓Crawl the site (Screaming Frog or similar) and check that return tags are reciprocal across markets
  • ✓Re-check Search Console's international targeting reports at two weeks and again at six

Shopify's changelog entry describes the new admin control for automatic hreflang tags.
