Shopify currency changes back at checkout

Why Shopify can show local prices before checkout but charge in the store currency, and how gateways, Markets, apps, and cart context determine the result.

Symptom

Prices display in a shopper's local currency on product and cart pages, then switch to the store currency when checkout opens.

Start with these checks

  • 01Confirm Shopify Payments or Adyen is the primary gateway for true multi-currency checkout.
  • 02Test the intended market using its country selector, shipping address, and a compatible payment method.
  • 03Remove display-only currency apps from the test and inspect locale-aware cart requests.

A currency switch at checkout usually means the storefront localized the display but the payment stack cannot process that currency. Display currency and transaction currency are not the same capability.

Shopify documents that true local-currency checkout requires Shopify Payments or Adyen as the primary gateway. With other providers, customers can browse in a local currency but checkout converts the order back to the store's default currency.

Why currency apps cannot guarantee checkout currency

Theme and currency apps can format or convert product prices, but Shopify owns checkout. If the primary gateway is not compatible with multi-currency processing, the displayed local price is converted back to the store currency for payment.

Even compatible setups can fail contextually when the shopper switches countries without rebuilding the cart in the correct locale, or when a theme feature makes a background request against the store's default route.

  • Display-only conversion
  • Unsupported primary gateway
  • Wrong market or customer country
  • Non-locale-aware Ajax cart requests

How to test a Shopify Markets currency setup

Start a fresh session, select the target country, add a product through the localized storefront, and complete checkout with a target-market shipping address. Compare the market currency, cart currency, checkout currency, and payment method.

If Shopify Payments or Adyen is unavailable in the store's country, treat the limitation as an architecture decision. A converter app cannot unlock a payment capability the gateway does not provide.

  • Test without cached cart state
  • Use the correct country and market
  • Confirm the gateway and payment method support the currency
  • Check that Ajax endpoints use Shopify.routes.root

When one store cannot deliver the required currency model

For some businesses, honest store-currency checkout is better than a surprise switch. Others need separate regional stores because local pricing, settlement, tax, and payment methods are core requirements rather than optional display preferences.
